For our first study session, download the following files:
Blacks Law Second Edition Black’s Law is a commonly used legal dictionary. The second edition is no longer under copyright. You will eventually want to get a hard copy legal dictionary.
The_Law The Law is the very best, most concise book on law, government and economics I have seen. You don’t need to read this prior to study group.
For our initial meeting, look up the definitions to the following in the Black’s Law 2nd edition:
jurisdiction
person
stand
understanding
understood
We will compare these to the sixth edition in our first meeting. Please be prepared to discuss potential meeting times. I would also like to explore net meetings or conference calls for in between meetings.
Thanks Keith. I’ve also downloaded the 9th edition of Blacks. Are you using the 6th edition just because you happened to have it, or for a more instructive reason?
Tuesdays and Thursdays are almost always booked for me. Wednesdays conflict with church. Some Mondays are booked, but Fridays are probably my best option.
I’m delighted with web meetings, too. What meeting/collaboration tools do you have readily available?
According to a lot of people, the 6th edition is the last edition true to a constitutionalist mindset. I will be interested in comparing all three versions. The term ‘person’ clearly morphs from primarily a human being prior to 1933 into a corporation by the sixth edition circa 1980. We are all merchant marine corporations now. You may have noticed that all legal documents – Drivers License, Social Security Card, Mortgages, Credit Cards – put your name in all capital letters. This legally identifies a corporation from a human being.
There is also Bouviers used a lot by the supreme court. Merks is sometimes used by lower courts now.
What is really tricky is any word used in law can be defined to mean something entirely different than a legal dictionary or normal use would imply. I expect everyone will get a rude awakening when we study traffic law.
